One of Rio Grande City's coaching legends, Villegas is one of the few Valley mentors to have success in two different sports.

Villegas made All-District in football at McAllen High School and honorable mention All-State in basketball before graduating in 1959 and moving on to Pan American College. He was a point guard on the Broncs' 1963 NAIA title team and played on the USA All-Star team touring South America.

Turning his attention to coaching after earning a degree from Pan American in 1964, Villegas coached the RGC basketball squad from 1965 to 1982, taking the undersized Rattlers to the state quarterfinals in 1979.

On the football field, he coached the Rattlers from 1982 to 1987, taking the team to the area round of the playoffs in 1984. He then became the RGC full-time Athletics Director in 1984, and held the position until he retired in 1997.
