A football star for Lyford High School in 1947 who started college at Brownsville Junior College and ended a three-year starter for North Texas State University, Nyquist went on to become one of the most enduring presences on the area coaching scene.

He began at Rio Hondo High School in 1957 and soon moved into a successful stint in the Harlingen junior high system, where his record was 75-25-6. After replacing Oscar Perez at Lyford in 1976, he compiled a 69-46-4 football record there and at San Isidro High School.

Nyquist was one of the few coaches who made the grade with both boys' and girls' sports, as he mentored girls' track and volleyball units at San Isidro, winning 105 of 139 games in volleyball. All told, 70 athletes advanced to track and field regionals under his tutelage. Nyquist was a regular at the UIL state track meet in Austin for many years.
