He then played freshman football at Texas A&M University before joining the Navy in 1943. He made Service Football All-America in 1944-45, ending up at Notre Dame University after the war, where he was an All-America selection on the line for the unbeaten Fighting Irish of 1946.

He was selected by the Los Angeles Rams in the 1946 NFL Draft. He played for the Brooklyn Dodgers in the All-American Football Conference from 1946 to 1948, starting both ways.

He then began a coaching career that took him to St. Ambrose (Iowa), Brownsville St. Joseph, Yoakum, and California.
