Ramirez was a football and track letterman at Rio Grande City High School, where he graduated in 1986.

He was a member of the varsity football and track teams. Ramirez was outstanding sprinter and jumper setting Valley records in the 100-Meter Dash (10.34), 200-Meter Dash (21.13) and the long jump, which he currently holds at 24’ 2 ¼”. As a senior, he won the Gold medal in the 200 Meter Dash (21.3) at the State meet and a Silver medal in the Long Jump (23’3”). That spring he was selected to the Junior National Olympic Team which traveled and competed in Seoul, South Korea.

After high school, he received a track and field scholarship to The University of Texas. He competed in the 200-Meter Dash, 400-Meter Dash, Long Jump, Sprint Relay and Mile Relay, earning All-American and All-Conference honors. In 1991 he graduated with a bachelor’s degree and returned to Rio Grande City to begin his coaching career.
